  • ASCB Roundup – Sutter Lambda XL

Stopped by the sutter booth to check out the XL. It’s been out for a while but it’s always good to see.  They had it running in a filter wheel loop for the duration of the show. Key features of this system are: 10,000 hr bulb lifetime intensity stable better stability over bulb life integration […]

  • ASCB Roundup – 3i Vivo 2 Photon

3i (Intelligent Imaging Innovations) Has added 2 Photon capability to their live animal Vivo microscopy system, and they had a unit running at the show. Key features of this system are: Competitive Price point ($250-300k) Coupling ability with the SAC system Camera can be coupled to system to support traditional widefield imaging.

  • Lambda XL Start/Stop Driver

I’ve added a Lambda XL driver to the free macros list that will enable the start and stop of the lamp from within Elements. This hasn’t been widely tested so give it a shot and let me know what you think! You can find the driver on the resources page or click here.

  • Upcoming ASCB roundup

I’ll be attending the ASCB conference tomorrow and will report on the latest technology available to our industry. I’m really looking forward to checking out the multi-photon systems now available!

  • Technical Instruments Macro Pricelist

A complete pricelist has been added to the macros and journals page. This is a menu of the standard plugins we have available for Elements and MetaMorph.

  • Neuroscience 2009 – Musicians hear better!

One of the presentations at the Neuroscience show in Chicago this year states that serious musicians are better at perceiving and remembering sounds than the average Joe. Cool stuff!

  • Elements 3.1 “App failure” after install fix

I’ve had an “Application has failed to launch” error after installing Elements on 3 new systems recently. Nikon has released a temporary fix until they update the installer. You can find the fix on my resources page or  here is the direct download.

  • Formable Mirrors for Microscopy

I’ve been waiting for adaptive optics to be used in microscopy for a few years now. It became a side interest when I read about the uses of formable mirrors in ground-based astronomy. It now looks like a few groups are using these mirrors in microscopes! One can imagine the multitude of applications of a […]

  • Flash Memory for Imaging?

This article describes a novel approach to acquiring an image digitally: use flash memory! Some of the limitations described in the article are the lack of dynamic range (only binary data is acquired) however the small size of flash memory may enable a gradient of optical densities to be laid down on an array of […]

  • Tricks for Volume View and Deconvolution

Here are a few simple guidelines for deconvolution and presentation of deconvolved data. I’m posting them because it seems like I’m always forgetting one step or another, which results in waiting another 20 minutes for decon data to re-process… Acquisition: 1. Remember that the larger signal to noise you can get will deconvolve better. Large […]
